AGENCY

CAPSTONE: I understand that agency is given to us so that we may make correct choices based on our knowledge of the gospel.  In order for us to make these correct choices we must know what is right and wrong for ourselves and not trust another’s wisdom, because we are the ones that will be judged on our actions alone.  A few of my quotes said that we all need agency so that we can have happiness and growth in this world and eternal life in the world to come.  I believe this to be true.  I know that when we make good choices we are blessed and we can keep the companionship of the Holy Ghost, which is a priceless gift for me.  I know that he sits beside me and strengthens me, but if I wasn’t clean because of a bad choice I had made, he would leave my side.  This helps me try to live a clean and pure life.  I also know that I need to teach my children how important it is to not only learn the gospel teachings, but to love them, so they can live them fully as they grow older.  That they may understand why we follow the commandments and what the purpose of this life is, so when it comes time for them to leave my home they are protected by the outside evils.           -becki johnson

1.  “One who exercises free agency by faith grows from challenges, is purified by sorrow, and lives at peace. In contrast, one who frantically seeks to satisfy appetite and worldly desire is driven in a downward spiral to tragic depths. Temptation is the motivating influence in his exercise of free agency.”

2.       “Lucifer would have denied us our free agency, the freedom to make decisions. We cannot remember that his plan was not accepted by us because, without choice, there would not have been a purpose for coming to this mortal probation. We would not have had opposition or repentance. We would not have learned obedience.”

3.        “To fully understand this gift of agency and its inestimable worth, it is imperative that we understand that God’s chief way of acting is by persuasion and patience and long-suffering, not by coercion and stark confrontation. He wants to help us and pleads for the chance to assist us, but he will not do so in violation of our agency. He loves us too much to do that, and doing so would run counter to his divine character.”
-President Howard W. Hunter, “The Golden Thread of Choice,” October 1989 General Conference https://www.lds.org/general-conference/1989/10/the-golden-thread-of-choice?lang=eng

4.        “The scriptures speak in general terms, leaving us free to apply the principles of the gospel to meet the infinite variety of life. But when they say “thou shalt not,” we had better pay attention.”
-President Boyd K. Packer, “Our Moral Environment,” April 1992 General Conference https://www.lds.org/general-conference/1992/04/our-moral-environment?lang=eng

5.        “We have been given agency, we have been given the blessings of the priesthood, and we have been given the Light of Christ and the Holy Ghost for a reason. That reason is our growth and happiness in this world and eternal life in the world to come.”

-President Boyd K. Packer, “Atonement, Agency, Accountability,”April 1988 General Conference  https://www.lds.org/general-conference/1988/04/atonement-agency-accountability?lang=eng

7.        “Latter-day Saints are not obedient because they are compelled to be obedient. They are obedient because they know certain spiritual truths and have decided, as an expression of their own individual agency, to obey the commandments of God.”
-President Boyd K. Packer, “Agency And Control,” April 1983 General Conference https://www.lds.org/general-conference/1983/04/agency-and-control?lang=eng

8.        “I have heard a few parents state that they don’t want to impose the gospel on their children but want them to make up their own minds about what they will believe and follow. They think that in this way they are allowing children to exercise their agency. What they forget is that the intelligent use of agency requires knowledge of the truth, of things as they really are (see D&C 93:24). Without that, young people can hardly be expected to understand and evaluate the alternatives that come before them.”

9.        “The secret to solve problems in your life will be found in understanding and using the eternally beneficial interaction of your agency and His truth.”

10.    “Given our agency, we are therefore individually responsible for our ideas, acts, habits, character, and, yes, even our destiny.”
