Isaiah 48-66, Week 7

Choice 3: The Lord’s Thoughts & Ways

Isaiah 55:8-11
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

Jacob 4:8
8 Behold, great and marvelous are the works of the Lord. How unsearchable are the depths of the mysteries of him; and it is impossible that man should find out all his ways. And no man knoweth of his ways save it be revealed unto him; wherefore, brethren, despise not the revelations of God.

1 Corinthians 2:14-16
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

How is the message of these verses one of comfort?

These verses are comforting because we know that God's words and acts are great and marvelous and that since he knows all the mysteries of what life has to offer and what is to come, we know he will share them with us when we are ready through the prophet or personal revelation through the Holy Ghost.  We should not be afraid of the unknown, because He will tell us all we are supposed to know.

How can we come to better understand God’s

thoughts and ways?

We can better understand God's ways by reading the scriptures, what better way to learn of Him then by his own doctrine or example and guidance through His prophets.  Being humble will make it easier to understand what he wants us to do and allows us to trust in Him and His wisdom and not ours or mans.  Learning about Him and building a relationship with Him will allow us to know who He is and His love for us.

Give an example of when you have observed a clear

 example of God’s ways being higher than man’s

ways.

I worked in dental offices for almost 10 years and in that time I saw a lot of different stages of cleanliness, I also sadly saw a few cases of the affects of chewing tobacco in the mouth.  The sores that this substance can cause and eventually lead to cancer is horrifying.  Our Heavenly Father foresaw the harmful impacts of many things and gave us the Word of Wisdom in 1833.  This revelation was implemented as a means of keeping members of the church healthy in all things.  In return, if we live this counsel we are promised:
  • shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;
  • shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;
  • shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.
  • the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them.
In my own life, I have seen the impact smoking can do to a person.  My grandmother smoked for 40 years and had terrible affects from it.  She quit cold turkey a few years ago, and though, didn't fully get over all her sicknesses, she did feel much better.

Our Heavenly Father gives us commandments and guidance as a way for us to be protected from the evils of the world.  He wants the best for us and to be able to live and happy and healthy life.
